When is a pyridine not a pyridine? Benzannulated <i>N</i>-heterocyclic ligands in molecular materials chemistry

The C═N bond is a critical structural piece of many N-donor ligand scaffolds and central to the properties reactivity important coordination complexes. For example, units play key role in “redox non-innocence” α-diimine complexes making charge-transfer excited-state character available N-heterocyclic ligands such as bipyridine. In N-heterocycles like pyridine, benzannulation can be used extend conjugated C═N-containing π-system quinoline (2,3-benzopyridine) acridine (2,3-benzoquinoline). This stabilizes lowest unoccupied molecular orbital molecule boosts its electron-accepting properties, but position matters. phenanthridine (3,4-benzoquinoline), an asymmetric isomer acridine, bears similarly electronically accessible extended with more chemically isolated “imine-like” moiety. award paper presents overview our work investigating impact site-selective on chemistry ligand.
